The town of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, has been making some pretty creepy headlines lately. Just recently it was reported that the apparition of a boy wearing Victorian clothing was caught on camera when a man was snapping pictures while walking through an alleyway that runs under Victoria Hall.
And now another picture has surfaced revealing what appeared to be a ghostly figure at Bolton’s Smithills Hall. As a matter of fact, it was the recent news report of the ghostly boy wearing Victorian clothing that prompted a woman named Carole Ogden to look through her old photos from when she was on a historic tour of the town back in 2017.
While visiting the Smithills Hall, she took several pictures and in one of them there appeared to be a mysterious smudge that wasn’t there in the previous photo or the one she took immediately after. While some people have speculated that it was a ghostly male, others have suggested that it could have been a spirit animal.
“I took several photos of the window and this was the only one with the anomaly. Some people say it looks like a cat, an owl, a fox or an old man with a beard – one even said it’s like the Lorax,” she said, adding, “I am sceptical but I don’t know. I honestly can’t find an explanation. It looks like something coming out of the window and beginning to form.”
The picture of the mysterious figure can be seen here.
The hall is rumored to have a lot of paranormal activity with numerous people seeing the ghost of a grey lady. Other ghostly apparitions include a priest and even a cat that meows.
The chapel is particularly haunted with one example including witnesses who noticed someone kneeling in prayer but when they went back to look, nobody was there. Perhaps it was the ghostly priest? Another encounter occurred when a staff member was taking out some dead flowers and they were pushed from behind into the wall from an unseen entity.
Another ghost is a man named George Marsh who was a farmer that was taken to the hall prior to being burnt at the stake for being a Protestant back in the year 1555. His ghost has been seen in the Green Room where he was interrogated. Furthermore, his footprint in the stone floor is said to turn to blood every year on April 24th which is known as St. Mark’s Eve when people in several English villages can see the ghosts of those who will pass away within the next year.
One day when the shop manager looked into a Pugin mirror, he noticed a man wearing all black with white bushy hair who was watching him from the doorway but when he turned around, the man was gone. The worker saw the same ghostly male two more times.
Additional paranormal activity includes the sounds of children laughing and objects inexplicably moving on their own. The glasses on the table in Colonel Ainsworth’s room are often found moved in the mornings. And the barrier ropes have moved as if someone walked against them. There have even been unexplained occurrences on the outdoor grounds of the hall that includes the sounds of horses and unexplained footsteps. This is certainly one paranormally active location.
