Strange “Creatures” and Connections to Ouija Boards and Seances

“Stan Gooch began his career as a highly regarded psychological researcher who studied the evolution and history of the brain in his books Total Man and Personality and Evolution. His research on paranormal influences and Neanderthal culture appear in his books The Neanderthal Legacy, Dream Culture of the Neanderthals, The Origins of Psychic Phenomena, The Double Helix of the Mind, Cities of Dreams, and The Secret Life of Humans. He passed away in 2010.” Those are the words of Simon & Schuster, who published some of Gooch’s books. It’s not one of his works that I’m about to talk about, however. Rather, it’s a very strange experience Gooch had back in the 1950s. The location was the city of Coventry, U.K. It was on one occasion when, while Gooch was taking part in a séance, that something incredible happened. As the séance progressed, a strange creature manifested in the room. Gooch, himself, wrote of what came next: “This was a crouching ape-like shape, which became clearer as the moments passed. I guess it approximated to most people’s idea of what an ancient cave man would look like. Yet one could not make out too much detail – the eyes were hidden, for example. It stood in half shadow, watching us, breathing heavily as if nervous. I must say, though, that I sensed rather than heard the breathing. I could not decide whether our visitor was wearing the skin of some animal, or whether it had a rough coat of hair of its own.” As Gooch continue stare at the thing, he could only conclude that what he was seeing was nothing less than a “classic Neanderthal.”

Now, let’s get onto the matter of the Ouija board. A somewhat similar event to that above occurred in 1985, on the other side of the world, in Rochester, New York. The story comes from a woman named Laura who, at the time in question, was in her mid-teens. On one particular Friday night, when her parents were out for the evening and weren’t due to be back until well after midnight, Laura arranged for several of her friends to come over for a slumber party, something which involved them dabbling with a Ouija board; although Laura wasn’t aware of this aspect of the night’s entertainment until her friends arrived and one of them, Brooke, whipped the board out of a bag for all to see. For the four girls – Laura, Alison, Brooke, and Beth – it was the perfect way to have a diversion from school, homework, and boyfriend dramas. By Laura’s own admission, none of the girls had any clue about how to use a Ouija board in the slightest. In fact, Brooke aside, not a single one of them had even seen such a board in person before. Great fun resulted from asking the board about sex, boys, and their future escapades. Things got a bit more serious when each one attempted to contact a dead relative: somewhat of a dark and unsettling atmosphere briefly enveloped the four friends, causing them to suspect they had opened a paranormal portal to something malevolent.

It was in the early hours of the morning that something terrifying occurred: an abomination was about to put in an appearance. Laura was woken from her sleep by a noxious, sickly smell that filled her bedroom. She was about to turn on the light when, thanks to the moon’s illumination that gave a small amount of light to the room, she could see something standing in the corner of the room. Laura, hardly surprisingly, tried to scream but nothing came out. It was, she said, as if something was preventing her from making any noise; as if her very mind and body were under the control of the awful, shadowy thing that glared at her from the darkness. To Laura’s even greater terror, the beast began to move towards the bed, slowly and silently. She could then, finally, see what it was that had invaded her bedroom: it was a large, black-haired, beast that looked like a cross between a man and a huge ape. Its thick, long arms hung by its side, and its silvery eyes stared at her, betraying so sign of emotion whatsoever. The creature then moved closer still, around to the side of the bed and bending forward. Its face was barely six inches from Laura’s, at which point she could no longer fail to see that the thing before her was some form of primitive human, or something along the lines of a classic ape-man. In moments, it was gone.

Now, let’s leave strange creatures behind us and take a look at the connection between UFOs, aliens, the CIA and Ouija boards. Dr. Nelson Pacheco and Tommy Blann wrote in Unmasking the Enemy the following words: “The CIA began infiltrating séances and occult gatherings during the 50s… A memo dated April 9, 1953, refers to a domestic – and therefore illegal – operation that required the planting of a very specialized observer at a séance in order to obtain a broad surveillance of all individuals attending the meetings.” On the UFO issue, there’s the matter of the Men in Black and their connection to Ouija boards. I’m not talking about the M.I.B. of the Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith type. Rather, I’m talking about the Men in Black who descended on poor Flying Saucer enthusiast  Albert Bender, whose life was quickly turned upside down in the early Fifties. Bender was a user of the board, and had taken part in séances for a long time. Interestingly, Brad Steiger suspected that it was Bender’s use of Ouija boards that directly allowed the M.I.B. to enter Bender’s environment.  You may want to keep that in mind. You know: just in case, one day, you decide to get involved.
