The Dark Angel of Ohio’s Haunted Maple Grove Cemetery

Maple Grove Cemetery near Vermilion, Ohio, is said to be haunted and one of the eeriest places in the graveyard is the “Dark Angel” statue. There are two legends regarding the statue – both involving a woman called Alice.

The first story claimed that after Alice murdered her young daughter, she put up the large statue on top of the child’s grave. The woman died after becoming “insane with grief” and was buried next to her child. After her death, locals claimed that their livestock were being killed and some people noticed blood on the statue’s mouth and hands.

Many people believed that Alice’s spirit was present in the statue, making it fly out of the cemetery at night to attack and kill animals. After the killings began, the statue’s hands were cut off and the wings were clipped so that it couldn’t cause any more harm to the livestock and apparently that worked as no more animals were killed. And shortly after that, tears allegedly appeared on the angel’s face (perhaps Alice was sorry for her sins?).

The second version of the story is that Alice’s ghost was present in the statue but it was a nice spirit that would help bring local children to Heaven after dying from the cholera epidemic (the parents would place the deceased children into the arms of the statue where Alice would help take them to Heaven). However, after a preacher claimed that it was against God to do this, the statue’s hands were sawed off which supposedly angered Alice as she became a mean spirit who would hurt anyone who disrespected the angel statue.

But probably the most terrifying feature on the angel statue is its eyes. If the eyes start to glow when a person looks at them, it has been said that the individual will die within a short amount of time. But then someone decided to decapitate the statue – this would explain the angry spirit along with the statue being cursed and haunted. Additionally, there have been reports that Alice’s spirit will speak to those who bring a tape recorder with them to the cemetery.

There are countless stories of paranormally active graveyards from around the world but Maple Grove Cemetery with its haunted and cursed angel statue is definitely one of the creepiest legends I’ve heard. Pictures of the dark angel statue can be seen here.
