State fairs across the U.S. are known for monsters – monster trucks, monster bulls, monstrous portions of deep-fried food-on-a-stick. But plain old monsters? They wouldn’t dare show up at a state fair unless they were entered in the pie contest or running for office. That changed this year at the Wisconsin State Fair, which had a monstrous return after being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, when a witness spotted a 7-foot winged monster. On a stick?
“I looked up and there about 30 feet in front of us, toward the parking lot was what looked like a very tall being but it wasn’t like any person I have ever seen before. It was about 7 feet tall and thin but still looked very solid, it was coal black and had two glowing yellow eyes and it had wings!”
This report comes from Phantoms & Monsters, Lon Strickler’s excellent site, which has had extensive coverage of winged creature sightings in and around the Chicago area over the past few years, and The Milwaukee Record. Held annually in West Allis, the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds are about 100 miles due north of Chicago – an easy flight for a creature that the witness estimated to have a 12-foot wingspan. The yellow eyes are unusual – Mothman, the West Virginia winged creature, and other flying monsters are usually reported to have red eyes. The unnamed witness (who was with another person who also saw it) was cleaning up near the stage after a Christian rock concert (how ironic!) when they allegedly saw a creature the witness described as a “demon from hell.”
“This thing took a couple of steps toward the stage. It looked like it wasn’t all that steady on its feet but I wasn’t close enough to see what its feet looked like nor was I stupid enough to get close to this thing. It stood there for about 10 seconds before it turned its head and looked right at us.”
That’s not much to go on, as the investigator from Phantoms & Monsters pointed out. The witness took no photos and, outside of her friend (who was unavailable to interview) was the only person to see it. When asked if it could have been a large owl or crane, the witness said she was certain it was not a bird or other creature and decided it was a demon hanging around after a Christian rock concert. There’s no better place for a demon looking for a challenge when it comes to bargaining for souls! Based on this, the P&M investigator could make no identification of the creature.
Monsters – other than the truck, food and prize livestock variety – are not common at state fairs … but ghosts are, at least at the Minnesota State Fair. Held at the same location between Minneapolis and St. Paul since 1885, that fair is said to be haunted by ghosts of those killed in car races, during daredevil demonstrations or on unsafe old rides. However, there have also been sightings of ghost animals – including cows, dogs, crows and a phantom pig that is said to frequently visit the swine barn. Could the winged creature at the Wisconsin State Fair have been the ghost of an animal – maybe an angry second-place chicken or a giant turkey looking for its legs? The wings could be mistaken for a cape, so it might also have been the ghost of a caped daredevil motorcyclist.
Or has the Wisconsin Dogman sprouted some wings?
If you’re at a state fair, eat your fried anything-on-a-stick sitting down, so you can look around when walking around – and keep your phone ready.
Special thanks to Phantoms & Monsters for their report.
