Seven Ghosts That Appear Every August in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is known for its many paranormally active locations with some ghosts appearing during certain months of the year (June and July’s ghost sightings can be read here and here). And now that we’re in August, let’s discuss seven apparitions that are said to make themselves known every year during this month based on information provided by the Paranormal Database.

Every August 1st, the statue of Queen Anne that’s located at Queen Anne’s Gate in Westminster, London, is rumored to come to life by becoming animated before roaming around the neighborhood. This date is very important as Anne died on August 1, 1714. Is she marking her death date every year by taking a stroll around the area?

In Ingham, Norfolk, England, there are two stone knights at the Trinitarian Priory that allegedly wake up each year either on August 1st or 2nd and they go for a walk together. However, not everything is peaceful as they supposedly encounter a uniformed Asian soldier and they proceed to fight before returning back to their resting spot. Other people have reported seeing ghostly monks dancing around that location during the same time.

Another ghostly monk who went against his brothers for the Norman soldiers is said to haunt the ruins of St. Benet’s Abbey in Ludham, Norfolk, England. When two individuals were conducting an investigation of the location on August 10, 2019, they claimed to have witnessed a black dog-like creature that was around the same size as a small horse roaming around the area before vanishing near the monastery. While the monk has been seen numerous times, does the dog-like creature only show up on August 10th?

On Burgh Island, Devon, England, there is The Pilchard Inn and the spirit of a smuggler named Tom Crocker is rumored to haunt the building. In fact, he died at the pub many years ago on August 13th although the exact cause of death is disputed as some people said he was shot while others claimed he was hanged. Nevertheless, what isn’t disputed is that his ghost is seen every year on that date.

Many years ago, a nun named Bertha Rosata lived at the Chicksands Priory in Clophill, Bedfordshire, England. When she became pregnant by a male superior, she was treated terribly and now her ghost is said to show up every August 17th in order to protest how people treated her while she was alive. Those who have seen her ghost reported that she was wearing a black dress and vanished through a wall.

Every year on August 22nd, an apparition of a man wearing a hood has been seen at Beeleigh Abbey in Maldon, Essex, England. He has also been heard crying and screaming in the building. Some people believe it is the ghost of a monk, but others think it is a courtier named Sir John Gates who was executed for treason on August 22, 1553 because he supported Lady Jane Grey.

Three men allegedly sold their souls to witches to save the town of Beccles, Suffolk, England, from the Black Death. And every year on August 31st, they can be seen wandering around the streets for just one day.
