The World’s Creepiest Cemetery? Monsters, Ghosts, Werewolves and More

There’s no doubt that more than a few people get a creepy feeling from walking through cemeteries. However, some cemeteries provoke more fear than others. One of them is a certain cemetery situated not at all far from where I grew up as a kid. Wolf-men prowling around the woods of central England? The saga began in March 2007, when a paranormal investigations group, the West Midlands Ghost Club found itself on the receiving end of something extremely weird and surely unanticipated: a stash of reports of werewolf-like beasts seen lurking among the old gravestones of the Cannock Chase’s German Military Cemetery. It is a large cemetery where the remains of almost 5,000 German soldiers and airmen are held. During both the First and Second World Wars, numerous German military personnel were captured and transferred to prisoner of war camps across the U.K. Many of those same military personnel died during the hostilities and were buried in cemeteries and graveyards closest to where they were previously imprisoned. In 1959, however, the governments of the U.K. and Germany reached an agreement which resulted in the remains of the 4,929 Germans who died on British soil all being transferred to one, specific location: the then-newly constructed Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery.

How about a Slenderman at the cemetery? It was in June 2001 that Mike Johnson’s path crossed with that of the Slenderman – and, in terms of the path, I do mean that literally. The figure was not just tall, but impossibly massive for a human – somewhere in the region of nine feet. He/it was dressed in a dark gray-colored outfit that fitted him, or it, tightly. The thing’s head was bald and elongated, and his neck was incredibly long. As for the arms of the entity, they reached past his knees. What was particularly odd was the fact that Johnson could not make out the face of the man-thing. It was as if there was no face – or that it was somehow blurred. Onto another case: In a January 24, 2015 article that appeared in the Birmingham Mail newspaper (titled “Spooky Slender Men spotted in Cannock”), journalist Mike Lockley wrote: “A paranormal probe has been launched in the Midlands following FOUR sightings of Slender Men – long, stick thin specters feared around the world. Each of the chilling close encounters took place in the Cannock area, and now X-Files investigator Lee Brickley is trying to fathom why the ghoul has descended on the Staffordshire mining town. Slender Men have been a part of global folklore for centuries. They may be known by different names, but their harrowing, elongated appearance remains the same around the world.”

Now, onto nothing less than giant snakes on the cemetery. Here’s one such example on a huge snake on the Cannock Chase: For example, the local Birmingham Post newspaper recorded that: “In March, 2006, ramblers reported seeing a ‘fourteen-foot snake moving through the bracken’ near to Birches Valley. They said the beast had a powerful head and ‘coloring that stood out sharply against the greens and blues of the bracken.'” Despite the fact that there are without doubt no indigenous snakes in the British Isles of such a monstrous size at all, it is also a reality that, from time to time, stories of bizarre, snake-like and sea-serpent-like creatures do surface in the area.” Rather notable is the report of another huge snake seen at the cemetery less than two days later. It’s now time to take a look at matters relative to spectral hounds. Very muscular and utterly black in color, with a pair of large, pointed ears and huge, thick paws, the immense dog seemed to positively ooze both extreme menace and overpowering negativity, and had a crazed, staring look in its yellow-tinged eyes.

Late one evening in the early weeks of 1972, a man named Nigel Lea was driving across the Cannock Chase when his attention was suddenly drawn to a strange ball of glowing, blue light that seemingly came out of nowhere. It slammed violently into the ground just a short distance ahead of his vehicle and amid nothing less than a veritable torrent of bright, fiery sparks. Needless to say, Lea quickly slowed his car down to what was almost the proverbial snail’s pace. And, as he cautiously approached the approximate area where the light had seemingly fallen, Lea was both shocked and horrified to the absolute core to see looming before him what he described as “…the biggest bloody dog I have ever seen in my life.” As a very brief aside, the color of the eyes is interesting, as most of the Phantom Black Dogs are described as having glowing, self-illuminated red eyes. I have four cases of “Phantom Black Dogs” coming from that certain cemetery. Add to that, sightings of Bigfoot-like creatures, huge birds, Black-Eyed Children and more, and there’s no wonder the cemetery has provoked so much interest and intrigue. Fear, too.
