A home in Brumley, Missouri, called the Haunted Castle House has been referred to as the most haunted location in the Midwest. Built back in 1850 by a doctor, parts of the 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom house were used to treat sick patients, especially those who suffered from the flu pandemic of 1918, as well as wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Unfortunately, many of the patients who sought treatment at the home ended up dying there as well. In fact, there are reportedly at least 20 graves on the property.
Since so much death and suffering occurred in the home, it’s not surprising that there are several spirits that are said to roam around. The upstairs portion of the house is reportedly quite haunted which would make sense as that was where the doctor put the sickest patients. People claimed to have heard the disembodied sounds of a woman screaming and/or crying in the upstairs area.
Prior to a party at the house, the doctor’s wife was found dead at the head of the stairs and it’s her spirit who is believed to be heard and seen throughout the home (she is thought to be the source of the screams and cries). Several people have reported seeing “a woman in an antique party dress” at the top of the stairs and on the second floor.
Paranormal investigators claimed to have heard whistling sounds and footsteps when nobody else was in the house. And in the room where medical exams were performed, the motion detectors were set off even though it was empty. The team also felt sudden cold spots, and allegedly saw furniture moving on its own. They captured several EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) that included one by a little girl that seemingly said “please help me” – she may have been a child who suffered severe burns and was brought to the house where she supposedly died several days later.
In a 2017 interview with the News-Leader, then-owner Vicki Rowland said that her paranormal experiences included seeing numerous orbs of light. As for the deaths that have occurred on the property, she stated, “There was a murder-suicide at the gate.” “That much I do know. In the hospital room, guests woke up to somebody shaking the bed, with nobody being there. They felt someone tapping their shoulder or their arm to wake them up, and nobody was there.” “When somebody was shaking the bed, the other person in bed with them did not feel it or wake up.”
She went on to say that when a paranormal team left a recorder on all night outside of the hospital room and turret room, they captured sounds of what seemed to be “…carts being moved, like metal carts, tapping on the recorder, like tapping on glass,” she explained.
When the News-Leader contacted another former owner named Nick Sacco, he admitted that he and his wife experienced unexplained activity as well, even though neither of them were believers in the paranormal. He recalled that furniture would move on its own, especially rocking chairs, and that they felt sudden cold spots. He said, “Every single day, something happens there.”
Several creepy and possibly ghostly photos have been taken on the property and can be viewed here.
