Poinsett Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina, is said to be quite haunted, especially after the sun sets. In fact, a lot of people say that it is one of the most haunted locations in the entire state.
Built back in the year 1820 with a 14-foot-high gothic arch, there are several legends regarding the bridge. Based on local legends, the bridge was built on top of an old Indian burial ground. While it’s unclear whether it was an ancient burial ground or not, what is known is that the Cherokee people did occupy the land prior to the bridge being built. If there were people buried there and if their resting place was disturbed during the construction of the bridge, it would make sense that it is haunted by restless souls.

Another legend is that some of the workers who built the bridge died during its construction (mostly due to illnesses such as malaria) and were allegedly buried under and/or within the bridge, although that has never been proven. It is said that these ghostly workers visit the bridge to admire their hard work.
A rather disturbing story (also not validated) includes a slave being killed at or near the bridge with the victim’s ghost haunting the area. It is said that the floating orbs of light seen on the bridge and in the surrounding woods are the souls of those who have died there. Interestingly, the orbs are usually white, green, or red in color and appear similar to the light of a lantern.
Those who have visited the bridge after dark have reported hearing disembodied screams coming from the top of the bridge, as well as whispers from an unknown female. Some people have felt sudden cold spots while standing near the creek. Others have felt a ghostly hand touching them, in addition to seeing white figures moving around. When some visitors have attempted to leave the location, their cars would either stall or not start at all.

Furthermore, when a paranormal team named the GHOST Paranormal Research Organization (or GHOST P.R.O.) investigated the bridge back in 2008, they took almost 400 pictures and in nearly 100 of them, there was “some type of phenomena” that included numerous orbs of light and an unexplained man-sized mist.
Poinsett Bridge certainly seems to be one spooky location, especially at night.
