Two White Lady Ghosts May Haunt Conisbrough Castle

Conisbrough Castle in South Yorkshire, England, is known for its long and storied history going back to just after the Norman conquest in 1066, but most people are more interested its it paranormal aspects. A grey monk is the spirit most frequently seen, but there is also a White Lady ghost who is believed to have mysteriously plunged to her death from the castle keep. One ghost hunter who has had a number of encounters with Conisbrough Castle’s ghosts says there’s not one but two female spirits haunting the castle – and may have the photos to prove it.

According to historical sources, Conisbrough Castle was built in the 11th century by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, after the Norman conquest. It was acquired by Hamelin Plantagenet, the illegitimate brother of Henry II, and he and his son built the 92 ft-high keep. After many changes of hands, the castle fell into ruins in the 16th century. The property was taken over by the state in 1950, and in the 1990s the English Heritage joined in with a local charitable trust to restore it to a suitable tourist attraction.

The ghost of a grey monk has been reported frequently in multiple locations on the premises, occasionally passing through walls. Visitors have also seen strange lights emanating from the Chapel area and heard disembodied footsteps. The White Lady, seen walking the grounds, is believed to be the spirit of a woman who fell from the castle keep. Locals claim to hear the sound of a woman screaming at certain times of the year. Those ghosts are what attract visitors to Conisbrough Castle, including paranormal investigator Dean Buckley, who believes there are two female ghosts at the castle – one who jumped off the keep and another who was thrown from it.

In an email, Dean explains he first had an encounter with one of the ghosts in 2012 while walking the castle grounds – a woman dressed in 11th century clothing. Buckley says he followed the ghost and she moved away from him – appearing “horrified and astonished” and turning her head to see if he was still there. This continued until the spirit reached the spot where her body landed after she jumped or was pushed … and she disappeared.

Buckley says he‘s returned to Conisbrough Castle a number of times with different spiritualist mediums who claim the White Lady told them she was shocked that he had followed her, but she was willing to appear to him again. That happened in November 2021 when Dean and medium Veronica Buckley saw the White Lady ghost at the castle gates while on the the White Lady Ghost Walk from the White Lady Wine Bar on Church Street in Conisbrough. He says he followed her again as she “glided through the trees on the left in the same area where I saw her years ago.” This time, Buckley says he was with two locals who also saw the ghost.

“We all saw her white dress go through the trees in the moon light and disappeared between the trees.”

Dean Buckley was kind enough to include a number of interesting photos from his visits to Conisbrough Castle and its equally interesting ghosts. We’ll leave it to you to decide what they might be … one White Lady or two.
